How to redesign life and work without going nuts? This a question I keep asking myself over and over again… The Journey continues, I wrote this when I was in Tasmania, in Devonport on the way to Coles Bay, I slept 8:10h in the back of a Mitsubishi ASX, with a mattress, a pillow and a blanket that I bought on sale. It is my second day of consecutive fasting, I had meditated for 31 minutes on the seafront while it was dawn, I had worked precisely 195 minutes, I had rented a bicycle, and I had trained for 2 hours. Then I finished physical activity with a self-directed class of power yoga… I could say that I have almost absolute control of my life and work.

How to redesign life and work

Why do some people achieve great things and others not? Why are there people who in less time get three times more results? What happens between someone full and someone who isn’t? There is a tool that can help, I believe, to become that person, I call it the life-work redesign system.

Five parameters that make up the system:

  1. History
  2. Players
  3. Goals
  4. Rules
  5. Marker

These five parameters are the ingredients. Take them and contrast them with what you are doing in your life and work and you will begin to see habits that you haven’t noticed until now.

1. History

What’s the history of your work? I don’t think it’s going to be that you turn up, keep the seat warm and leave. But when you go deep, there are quite a few parts of the story, right? Example:

You play Battlefield One online. You could be a gunner fighting in the Italian hills. Your team is trying to get the bad guys out of the bunker.

Other squads are trying to avoid a tank on the hill. Your work is small compared to the battle, diminutive compared to the war, but it is essential, and the people here and there are counting on you.

Think about the work you need to do. How to redesign life and work is not easy but is not a very complex thing. You could be a commercial for a company of 560 people, but your work is part of the story. It’s up to you to think about the great story and the role you play in it.

2. Players

Maybe your team. Your bosses. Competitors. Members of the family. Your partner. They are all part of your life and work. What motivates them? How do they fit in your world? Who should be your ally?

3. Goals

What is the objective or where is the victory? This parameter is simpler. Maybe make a sale a day. Perhaps it is to make 3 creativities a day. Get 17 quotes per month, compose a song every two weeks, or write a book in a year. Whatever your role, I’m sure there’s something worth pursuing. What is it? However, remember this (it’s a problem): income is not usually the goal. Revenues are the reward, but victory is something different, something more.

4. Rules

Which are the rules? If you think about this, you will know the rules of your life and work, easy. What you must discover is why are those rules even exist. Then think about what laws will help you earn more and better. This is the key, once you know the rules, you can take advantage of them, even create new ones for yourself. We often focus on what holds us back, but there are many rules (core skills, super habits, ultra-productivity, high performance) that work as significant advantages. Find those.

5. Marker

What is the scoring method? Here is an important one, go to work, arrive sooner and leave sooner is the goal. You know this better than me. How do you move towards that goal? How do you go about the story? And how do you improve your score?

The key is to the redesign

The problem is that our minds are distracted and forget very quickly. One way to stay on the road is to focus on a redesigned system for your life and work. One that acts more like a game, and determines that it will cost you to win.

Try, on a sheet, to discover these points of your life or work. You could find answers and a new way to win. Or not. How to redesign life and work is something you must aim for.
