/ Interview, Self-Mastery.

In August, I had the privilege of participating in an intensive camp at the Shaolin Temple Europe. It was a transformative experience centered on Shaolin arts, and you can find my detailed account of the journey here. During this time, I had the honor of training under and learning from Shi Heng Yi, a third-generation Shaolin master.

What began as a personal training journey evolved into a deep exploration of discipline, self-mastery, and inner harmony. Shi Heng Yi graciously agreed to an interview, which you can access in full via podcast and video. Now, I can share with you a summarized and expanded version of our conversation.

The Core of the Conversation: Self-Mastery, Harmony, and Purpose

Shi Heng Yi embodies the teachings of Shaolin, blending physical, mental, and spiritual practices into a harmonious life philosophy. Our conversation revolved around essential principles:

  • How to master self-control.
  • The connection between physical challenges and mental growth.
  • Finding balance and harmony in a chaotic world.
  • Becoming your own master through intentional focus and discipline.

Interview Highlights with Shi Heng Yi

1. Key Moments in Life

Isra García: What are the defining moments of your life, and why?

Shi Heng Yi:
“The key moments in my life are those that keep me in the present. Living in the moment is the essence of my journey. At four, my father introduced me to Shaolin arts, shaping the foundation of my path. Without that, my life would have been completely different.”

His reflection teaches us that pivotal experiences often involve deep learning and the guidance of others. These moments, coupled with consistent practice, form the building blocks of a purposeful life.

2. The Meaning of Shaolin Arts

Isra García: What do Shaolin arts mean to you?

Shi Heng Yi:
“Initially, I was attracted to the physicality—strength, acrobatics, and overcoming challenges. Over time, I realized the parallels between physical and mental struggles. Shaolin arts are a gateway to understanding life itself.”

The deeper layers of Shaolin arts connect body and mind, teaching resilience, adaptability, and mindfulness.

3. How to Gain Self-Control

Isra García: How can someone develop self-control?

Shi Heng Yi:
“Self-control is about mastering yourself in specific areas where you have dedicated immense time and energy. It is the ability to remain balanced and at peace, even in challenging situations.”

This perspective underscores the importance of consistency, self-awareness, and developing the capacity to remain unshaken by external forces.

4. Becoming Your Own Master

Isra García: Is there a methodology for becoming your own master?

Shi Heng Yi:
“The first step is awareness—understanding where you place your attention. In today’s world, distractions are everywhere. To change yourself, focus less on external stimulation and more on your internal state. This shift unlocks self-mastery.”

5. Teaching Shaolin Philosophy in Europe

Shi Heng Yi established the Shaolin Temple Europe to share these teachings with people from diverse cultures. According to him:
“True wisdom transcends geographical and cultural boundaries. The essence of Shaolin is relevant to everyone seeking peace and balance, regardless of where they come from.”
